Momentum

It was just one of those days, you know? Calcifer just sat in the hearth, and he was just so bored. He watched as Markl played with Heen, and he just ignored the Witch of the Waste’s dazed stare. If it’d been up to him, he would’ve been outside, flying around like the shooting star he was. But apparently he couldn’t do that today because it was raining . . . again.

And now the only thing there was to do was to watch Howl and Sophie being all lovey-dovey with each other. It wasn’t much to watch. He already knew the routine. Just a few hugs here and there, mostly a lot of teasing, and —

HEY! NO KISSING IN THE LIVING ROOM!”

Yep, just same old same old. Really, it wasn’t anything new — in fact, it’s just gotten downright boring. After Calcifer would reprimand them, Howl would just come up with some wimpy excuse while Sophie would just apologize. Honestly, it was just normal every-day things, you know?

But for these last few days, Sophie had been really tired, too tired to bother with much of anything really. So while Howl told his justification, she would just yawn or just simply wouldn’t be bothered with any of it. Though it was a bit strange, Calcifer had just shrugged it off. Who knew what Howl had done to Sophie in the dark of the night to make her so tired?

Well, anyway, the afternoons were a bit more eventful. It would seem that Howl could find a bunch of reasons to anger his wife, and afterwards, she’d just scold him. However, for these last few days, Sophie had been more . . . moody lately. She’d start yelling at Howl now, and sometimes she’d even leave the house in a fit of rage.

Of course, Howl would chase after her, but there had been a number of times when she just refused to return to the house. Howl would also throw his temper at these times, calling on the spirits of whatever and summoning all that disgusting green slime. By the third time, Calcifer and everyone else in the household had grown used to it and didn’t even mind it as they just continued with whatever they were doing amidst all the slime. Sophie would return hours later in the evening only to yell again as she’d find the house drowned in slime.

And of course, they’d start this whole cycle again the next day, starting with all the lovey-dovey stuff.

Calcifer sighed. Just how did his days get so tedious?

It was only days later that the news of Sophie’s pregnancy reached the household demon. It would seem that his days would get a little more momentum, after all.

Finally, something Calcifer could look forward to!

Ending notes: I actually published this on fanfiction.net on Sept 1, 2010, and it was a pretty cute fanfic, so I decided to fix it up to post it here on my blog. Hope you guys enjoyed it! I tried to mix the Ghibli movie characters with a bit of their book personality, but like it didn’t really convey very well…
