11. The Older Sister’s Fear 姉の恐怖

It’s around mid-afternoon, and your sister is coloring in a sheet of paper again, but there is no hazelnut scent in the air. You head to the kitchen, and when you return to the living room with your coffee mug in hand, your sister is nowhere to be seen.

No worries, you think. She’s probably in her room.

She’s not.

Maybe the bathroom?

She’s not there either.

She’s not hiding in the closet. She’s not crawling behind the sofa. She’s not pressing buttons in the laundry room. The front door and the door to the balcony are still locked, and you check all the rooms again and again and again.

You’re frantic, and you can’t breathe. You scream her name over and over again, but there’s no answer. Your chest hurts, your heart is thundering, and you feel as though you’ll suffocate.

Your hands go limp, the cup shatters, and coffee stains the white rug.

You wake up. Your sister wakes up confused and groggy. You apologize and pat her back until she falls back asleep.

It was only a bad dream…
